Set atop a hill on the west arm of Grand Traverse Bay and nestled in the woods this cottage takes the cabin of yesterday into the cottage retreat of the next century.
Using natural materials on both the interior and exterior creates a beautiful residence as well as a very comfortable spot to snuggle up next to the fireplace on a cold Michigan winter night.
Designed as a sportsman’s retreat, this home became the ultimate evolution of the childhood tree house. Nestled among the trees, they became an integral part of the homes structural system as well as a significant part of the design. Overlooking the Little Manistee River the home is cantilevered over the edge of the bluff towards the river to take advantage of the views and create that tree house feeling. Details such as a room specifically designed for cleaning fish add to the complete sportsman escape.
Set high upon a sand dune the existing home was crying out for a facelift befitting of the beautiful landscape and topography. The existing entry, as shown, had no presence and spoke lengths about the overall design of the building.
Details such as decorative gable brackets, curved entry porch roof, retractable awning, custom interior shelving with integral lighting and window placement all contribute to drastically transform this home.
Overlooking Torch Lake, north of Traverse City, Michigan, the light and airy feel of this cottage is reminiscent of the cottages from the East Coast. Unique details such as a curved ceiling bedroom, wrap around porches, and window placement result in a one of a kind structure. Simple materials along with innovative design create a home, which is easy to maintain while still being a wonderful place to live.
